families. did romney get -- what do the polls show? did he get any bounce out of the presidential debate? >> it is looking that way, sure. the first polled a little bit -- the other ones are starting to tickle out, showing a little bit of movement in his way. these are bounces, though which is why they call them bounces. it is already coming back down -- the polls were moving in romney's direction a few days before the debate kind of that natural, kind of movement of polls post convention and this certainly accelerated it. so the jobs numbers probably helped slow the obama fall but now we move into another week people will be talking about biden, and then a couple of more with romney and obama. >> bill: yeah, i was surprised and impressed, i guess that obama proved -- so he didn't have a good night, we all know that, but i thought he bounced back pretty quickly the next day. he has been having a lot of fun with the big bird line. and it showed a lot of resilience, i thought, and as you point out the job numbers came on friday which gave him another little boost, c

shows the president with a three-point lead over mitt romney. that poll includes responses given before and after the debate. take a look at this. gallup's job approval poll taken entirely after the debate. 48% say they approve of the job the president's doing while 46% disapprove. before the debate, gallup had the president's approval rating at 54%. 42% disapproval. more on these stories throughout the next hour. president obama and his campaign might have broken a fundraising record last month, but he's still in fundraising mode, as i mentioned a few moments ago. president obama will land in los angeles where he will be attending a star-studded concert this afternoon followed by a $25,000 a plate dinner tonight. he'll end the evening at a private event with former president bill clinton and a dozen of his top donors. it's the latest in a series of trips to tinsel town to raise money. joining me now is our nbc white house correspondent. we've been talking about it all weekend. president obama's record setting fundraising total for last month. $181 million raised in just one month. camp

you've seen, and the polls show it, the romney/ryan ticket has momentum. the polls have tightened in recent days following mitt romney's performance, where he obviously won that debate. there's a lot more attention here. if joe biden is able to perform very well -- and he's a pretty good debater. if he's able to perform pretty well perhaps he can stem some of that momentum, at least dampen a little criticism heading into the debate next week in new york, buy the president a little time. if paul ryan clearly dominates in this debate it will be seen very much as a one-two punch and that will just mean more momentum. >> they've been, as we call it in college, cramming. how have both of them been preparing? >> reporter: yeah. it is like cramming. i think it's sort of like going back, studying for -- one aide told me it's like studying for the s.a.t.s in the middle of a campaign. they go over a lot of briefing materials. they're brushing up on domestic and foreign policy, getting to certainly know each other's positions on everything. there's a lot of sort of time spent aalone where th

and from new hampshire. the latest arg poll of likely voters shows mitt romney at 49% and president obama at 46%. that's in florida right now. that's within the sampling error. meanwhile, with just 25 days to go before election day there are some serious concerns about a republican financed voter registration effort in the state. cnn's crime and justice correspondent joe johns is joining us now with the latest on a criminal investigation making waves right here in washington. joe, what's going on? >> wolf he is a veteran gop operative who just doesn't seem to go away. a few weeks agoaway. a few weeks ago, a wave of bad publicity hit the waves. he was disavowed by the republican national committee. tonight, some democrats that criticize his tactics say they're worried he may still be operating in several key battleground states under a different company name. >> it all started with nathan sprule. they came under fire for providing false information at the supervisor of election office. they responded by throwing him under the bus even though he denies wrong doing.

or two, by about half in some of these polls. putting mitt romney within striking distance of the president. now, he may still, mitt romney may still have a challenge, a hurdle to clear with some undecided voters here. and that's surrounding this auto bailout. the president of course supported that bailout, pushed it through. the president and his campaign says that bailout saved hundreds of thousands of jobs not just in detroit but here in ohio and elsewhere around the country as well. we'll have to see whether governor romney will be able to close the deal with some undecided voters. potential challenge notwithstanding, paul ryan made the case again here today why he believes the country needs to make a change in the white house. >> right now people in the top two tax brackets, they can shelter a lot of their income from taxation by putting them in various tax loopholes. take away those tax shelters and more of their income is subject to taxation. so the base of income that is being taxed is bigger and broader. that means we can lower tax rates for everybody. >> reporter:
